BIRDS OF PREY IN THE GREAT HALL

Monday, 20th October, 2008

Well, now for something completely different…………..! Not an historical visit or lecture but an evening spent meeting nine of the various birds of prey from Lancashire Hawks and Owls

Michael and Margaret introduced us to Ruby, the little owl, Brambles the Tawny Owl, Purdy, the Barn Owl who can dance the Twist and Taz, the white-faced Scops Owl who barks like a dog when unhappy! They ranged in size from the tiny Inca Jnr, a Burrowing Owl from Mexico to Jammu, the European Eagle Owl, the largest owl in the world. Zulu, the Great Grey Owl from Alaska -looking every bit as b ig as the Eagle Owl but actually weighing in at only 28 ounce being nearly all feathers and hardly any frame – flew across the Great Hall and not a sound did she make! All of the owls were happy to be introduced to their receptive audience and it was possible to hold them and stroke them.

Margaret delighted us with her tales of how they acquired the owls, how their rescue centre worked and general information on the various species of owls. A Harris Hawk and a Kestrel completed the line-up – altogether a splendid show of truly amazing birds and an evening much enjoyed by everyone. – check out their website – Lancashire Hawks and Owls.
