Visist to ALL HALLOWS CHURCH, GREAT MITTON
Tuesday August 26th 2009
Our visit to All Hallows Church, Great Mitton, was on a rainy and chilly August evening but a warm welcome was received from the Church members who guided us around this beautiful church and provided refreshments in the gallery overlooking the nave of the church.
The church dates back to 1270 and is probably the first church for Christian worship in the area. The nave is the oldest part of the church with the Chancel added in 1295. The Shireburn Chapel, replacing an earlier chapel in 1594, is divided from the Chancel by an Elizabethan Screen and contains monuments of the Shireburns including a polished alabaster tomb with figures of Sir Richard Shireburn and his wife - this also of the Elizabethan period.
Local historian, Roger Frost, provided an introduction to the visit by outlining the links between Burnley and Great Mitton.
A visit much enjoyed by everyone.
