What’s Afoot? – A History of Shoes
Monday September 21st 2009
A very well attended meeting enjoyed Brian Warburton’s interesting reminiscences of his life in the shoe trade. Brian had been a director at Lambert Haworths and recalled the days when making shoes in the UK had been a lucrative business. He gave a general outline of the rise of the shoe trade in the time of the Industrial Revolution and showed a DVD of the development of the trade particularly in the Rossendale area. Amusing anecdotes of his working life gave his audience much to chuckle about and they were able to look at examples of shoes through the ages and documents pertaining to Lambert Haworths and other areas of the shoe trade which Brian had kindly brought along from the Museum he had founded in Rossendale. The evening finished with refreshments.
