The first lecture of the season was “Lancashire’s Calderdale” presented, with slides, by Roger Frost. He traced the River Calder from its source at Portsmouth, near Cliviger through Burnley and onwards to Whalley where it joins the River Ribble.
The slides illustrated not only the surrounding countryside of past times and the comparison with more recent photographs showing how the areas had changed, but also historical buildings in the Calderbank valley area including Hurstwood Hall, Tattersalls Farm, Towneley Hall, St Peters Church, Bank Hall, Gawthorpe Hall, Moreton Park and Whalley Abbey.
An extremely interesting and informative lecture accompanied the pictures and when the members met afterward for refreshments, it was agreed that the vast wealth of knowledge imparted by Roger Frost was much enjoyed by all.
